Grass Shoulder Purse
A good seasonal or vacation tote. With a flat, strong bottom, it can hold a tablet, book, water bottle, makeup bag and sunscreen without tipping over.
These are one-of-a-kind, made with leather straps and clasp, and Kinkanhe, a grass naturally grown in Africa. Called by many different names -- veta vera, napier, elephant grass -- it's remarkably sustainable, a perennial that regrows within three months after harvest, requiring little water in large fields that become twice as tall as a person.
Other reasons to love the purse? We leave lots of room for the women who weave for Ti-a to explore creativity and decision-making. They see that their ideas and skills are feeding their children, and that's a very cool thing.
Each basket is unique and patterns will vary.
Approximate size:
- 17" x 5" x 10" (body)
- 17" x 5" x 23" (height with straps)
From the maker: Empowering Women through Weaving - there's much to love about our baskets.
Handcrafted in Ghana, they're made with Kinkanhe grass and a vibrant spirit. They function beautifully as fashion, storage, or art, with a talented weaver behind every basket.
Ti-a employs weavers in 10 villages, paying above fair trade wages and working mainly with women's co-operatives. Not that long ago, we had to ask for permission from her husband and tribal chief for a weaver to earn money. Today, she can pay for her children to go to school and she has a growing voice in her home. As she deserves.
